Saints win 2010 Super Bowl over Colts

New Orleans Saints 31 Indianapolis Colts 17

Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints, the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana on their first ever Super Bowl.

Led by quarterback and this years Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees the Saints were able to knock off Peyton Manning and the Indianpolis Colts 31-17 capturing the first Super Bowl in franchise history. Oddly enough for the eighth consecutive season the NFC conference won the coin toss giving the Saints the first possession of the game. Unfortunatley Brees barley missed Marques Colston on a deep pass attempt on third down setting up the first punt of the game. Indianapolis came out strong as Manning led them down the field, converting on three key third down plays. Although once in Saints territory the defence stood its ground and held the Colts to a Matt Stover field goal. The Saints managed nothing on their next possession and were forced to once again punt the football. A great punt left the Colts forced to start the possession at their own four yard line but that did not have any effect on Peyton Manning. He led them on a 96 yard drive concluding in a passing touchdown to Haiti native Pierre Garcon. New Orleans defence forced a punt from the Colts offence and drove the ball with ease down to the three yard line. In the goal line situation the Saints were put into a fourth down situation in which they elected to go for it. Coach Sean Peyton called for a running play but the Colts would have none of it and stopped the Saints for no gain. The Saints did manage to regain possession with under a minute left and put kicker Garrett Hartley in position for his second field goal of the game and cut the Colts lead to 10-6.

With the Colts set to get the ball at the beginning of the second half, Sean Peyton made the call of his career. He elected to go for an onside kick surprising everyone in the stadium and especially the Colts. The play proved to be a game-changer as the Saints gained immediate momentum and did not look back. After exchanging touchdowns and a Garrett Hartley field goal the Colts led 17-16, setting up a fourth quarter for the ages. Just 6 minutes to go Drew Brees was able to lead the Saints down the field and find Jeremy Shockey for a 2 yard touchdown. New Orleans elected to go for the 2-point conversion and after a lengthy review the catch made by Lance Moore was called a reception and pushed the Saints ahead 24-17. Then with just under five minutes to go and Peyton Manning throwing for multiple first downs, it appeared as if they were headed for the first overtime in Super Bowl History. Then on a zone blitz Saints cornerback Terry Porter stepped up made the play of his career. He was able to read the play and jump a route, intercepting Manning and taking the ball back 74 yards to the end zone for the score. The touchdown put the Saints up 31-17 and solidified the victory.
